The 98-Day Countdown

Most people book a vacation. Shanna booked a vacation in July and then ran a ninety-eight-day public countdown to it, like a rocket launch with better drinks.

The dispatch arrived on July 19, 2026, and it was not subtle. The vacation was booked — much needed, per the official report, capital letters hers — and the countdown was already running: See you in 98 days!!!

Ninety-eight days. The Patrol has run countdowns before, mostly to dinner, and can confirm that ninety-eight days is an elite-level countdown. It requires stamina, a calendar, and the discipline not to pack your suitcase in week two and then live out of it until October. The Patrol cannot confirm the suitcase part. The Patrol has questions about the suitcase part.

The Patrol adopts the countdown as an official operation. Rainbow does the honors, in the Patrol’s official color. Nobody asked why the marker had to be that exact green.

T-minus thirty: the countdown gets a target

A countdown, properly run, develops a personality. By late September, Shanna’s had one: on September 26, with thirty days to go, she aimed it directly at her mother. The dispatch was addressed to Angie Klippi and consisted of a view — palm trees, resort, Punta Cana — and one sentence of pure daughter: in 30 days, this will be your view.

This is advanced countdown technique. A countdown shared is a countdown doubled, and Gram — who was about to take her first Caribbean trip ever — was now officially on the clock too. (Her own file on that week is in the Gram Files, and the Patrol recommends it with its whole chest.)

Liftoff

October 25, 2026: the countdown hit zero, and the dispatch from the ground was everything a countdown is for. Made it to Punta Cana!!! Ready for a fun week — and GO STEELERS!!!

The Patrol wishes to note the priorities on display. Ninety-eight days of anticipation, an international arrival, a resort check-in — and the Steelers, filed in the same breath, in capital letters, from another country. This is not a distraction from the vacation. This is load-bearing fandom, and it held for the entire week.

The week itself, in her own dispatches, went the way the countdown promised: a Beautiful Monday. A midweek field note consisting entirely of Gotta love Dominican, which the Patrol has accepted as a complete review. Sun, family, Mark, and her mother having a total blast at seventy-four. Zero days of the ninety-eight were wasted, because the week cashed every one of them.

The trip home, or: the airport’s revenge

Every countdown has a shadow countdown: the trip back. On October 31, Shanna and Mark flew home, and the Atlanta airport ran its own operation on them — a departure gate that would not sit still. Their flight’s gate changed, and changed, and changed again, four assignments in all, a full tour of the terminal, before settling down.

And then — because this file refuses to end on an airport’s terms — the plane landed in Fort Myers nineteen minutes early. The next morning, November 1, the final dispatch of the operation arrived, and it is the perfect last entry in a ninety-eight-day log: Was a fun trip to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, with Angie Klippi and Mark Cancilla. Back to real life tomorrow.

The third camera: Mark’s dispatches

Three people posted that week, and the Patrol has cross-checked all three wires. Gram’s said she was having a total blast. Shanna’s are this story. Mark’s read like the trip’s itinerary and blooper reel in one: a patio right off their room (no complaints), great food, show after show, steel drums before dinner — and one Monday-evening inventory of the day that ran: a banana queen, a missing passport, medical attention, and Angie still waiting for someone to bring her a menu at the breakfast buffet. Readers of the vacation story will recognize every item on that list. Three cameras, one week, zero contradictions — the Patrol has verified the fun from every angle.

The Patrol’s official verdict

Countdown: completed flawlessly. Ninety-eight days booked, counted, aimed at her mother at the thirty-day mark, and redeemed in full, with an early landing as the cherry on top. Shanna is awarded the Golden Snout for Anticipation, Weaponized for Good. Real life, per the final dispatch, resumed the following day. It reportedly had it coming.

More in Shanna’s file

Story notes: Built from Shanna Kensinger’s Facebook posts — July 19, 2026 (the booking and the 98 days), September 26, 2026 (the view Gram was promised), October 25, 26, and 28, 2026 (arrival, the beautiful Monday, the Dominican review), and November 1, 2026 (the trip home, on the record), with the Atlanta gate changes and the early Fort Myers landing from the family’s own flight watch that Halloween. The countdown, the week, and the verdict on it are as she reported them. The Patrol’s calendar, marker, and awards are its own invention, as usual.
